What is Figma?

Figma is a design platform that aims to bring together powerful design features you already love and a more efficient workflow. Some features include:
  • A modern pen tool: Draw in any direction with Vector Networks. No more merging or needing to connect to the path's original point.
  • Instant arc designs: Design clocks, watch screens, or pie charts with the Arc tool.
  • Be expressive with OpenType: Tap into advanced font features to fully express the brand.

Figma's Autom Layout tool helps users spend more time iterating and less time moving things around.
  • Less manual resizing: Buttons can resize with their text and lists can rearrange themselves when items are moved around.
  • Stretch to fill: Auto Layout components can now stretch left and right (or top and bottom) for easier responsive design.
  • Design speaks development: Auto Layout’s padding, direction, and spacing settings translate directly into code, simplifying developer handoffs.

Its plugins help to remove manual, repetitive work, bring in data, and power custom workflows.
  • Plugins for everything: Stock imagery, flow diagrams, color accessibility, charts, and icons.
  • Designed for ease: A user that can build a website can build a plugin.
  • Private plugins: Organization customers can create and distribute private plugins within their company.

Create prototypes that are like the real experience

Figma helps turn static design files into an interactive experience—no coding required.
  • Intuitive build: Simply connect UI elements and choose your interactions and animations.
  • Interactions: Define subtle interactions, like on click, while hovering, while pressing a button.
  • Mobile-viewing: Experience designs in real life using our Figma mobile app, available for iOS and Android.
  • Advanced transitions with Smart Animate: Automagically animate similar objects and create detailed transitions.
  • Dynamic overlays: Create multiple layers of interactive content overlays.
  • Animated GIFs: Use GIFs to represent motion designs, video elements, and subtle animations.
  • All-in-one platform: Toggle between a design file and live prototype. Design edits appear instantly in a prototype.
  • Shareable prototype: Share a link to your prototype. View it anywhere with Internet.
  • Embedded commenting: Comment in a prototype. They carry over into the design file—so nothing gets lost.
Figma is available online as a SaaS, and it can be downloaded for WIndows, or MacOS. Figma is also available via a mobile app for iOS and Android.

Imagine every time you wanted to show stakeholders an updated design the devs would have to code it. After every round of feedback you'd have to essentially dedicate entire sprints in order to build the changes in order to have something to show the clients. Depending on the feedback, it could take devs days or weeks to build. Not only is that a waste of developer time and resources by having them put real dev hours into something that is volatile and could change drastically, but the devs could be spending those hours actually building things that have been approved and need to get built. My team using Figma (and by extension, the designers who use it) helps accelerate our design and iteration process by being able to make "good enough" representations of what our site should look and feel like and incorporate feedback into those designs in a trivial amount of time. This means that the iteration and conceptualization part can take place without using too much dev time and resources.
  • Presenting User Research
  • Lo-fi and hi-fi wireframes
  • Web Design Prototypes
  • Animation
  • More features for components
  • Better variant capabilities
Figma is great for conceptualizing lo-fi and hi-fi prototypes for helping stakeholders visualizing a solution. However when it comes to testing that solution, and needing to show that wireframe with interaction through a prototype...Figma still works...but it's not the most ideal solution to do so. A application designed for interaction prototyping (like Principle for example) would be better suited for a situation like that. The ironic thing is however, if Figma had just a bit more prototyping features it would suffice as a prototyping tool and be up to par with other competing prototyping solutions.

We use Figma to help mock up new services/applications that we are going to be building. And even for existing applications, Figma is used to help design new workflows and user experiences. Without a visual, working through the details with stakeholders can be quite challenging. Figma helps bridge the gap and solve that problem.

  • Accessibility
  • Offline functionality
  • Handling large files
  • Advanced animation
It’s great for remote and distributed teams. That’s exactly what we have at my company. Being able to collaborate and visually see things come together is invaluable. Rapid prototyping is also another great place Figma shines. Designers can quickly put together a prototype that allows simple clock throughs and allows stakeholders to touch and feel something.

I've found many use cases for Figma: - UI design - views for all kinds of screens, interactive prototypes for clients - Social media posts - creating infographics or carousels for Instagram or LinkedIn, getting feedback from teammates directly on each design - Data flows visualisation - creative diagrams, nice to look at - Daily brainstorming collaboration - ideas lists, moodboards, even trips planning!
  • Nice performance - even with complex projects
  • Multiplatform availability
  • Variety of use cases
  • Unlimited possibilities of plugins and extensions
  • The performance is good but as with all electron-based apps it always can be better!
  • More possibilities on mobile apps
  • More features for developers
As already noted Figma is well suited for a wide variety of uses.
Design, brainstorming, collaboration, planning, retros - all of those activities can be done there.
It's worth noting though that users need to stick to some rules on how to manage the spaces otherwise it may get cluttered.

Figma is essential for me to complete my day-to-day tasks. It helps me collaborate easily with other designers, engineers and product managers to create anything quickly from basic wireframes using various plug-ins to complex high fidelity prototypes using our design systems.
  • Easy to use and navigate tooling to create designs
  • Ability to collaborate and co-design with others
  • Regular feature updates that optimise design creation
  • To become a master you have to spend a lot of time learning, some things within prototyping can take a long time to figure out
I wouldn't recommend any other tool for designers when creating UI. Figma is the easiest to use with great features to help you achieve what you need to. I don't use FigJam as I find Miro is simpler for non-Figma users to grasp.

As a UX and Product Design team leader, we use Figma daily to design experiences, create clickable prototypes to share and perform user testing, run brainstorming workshops with FigJam, and manage our Design System. Figma solves so many business problems, including the ability to collaboratively create experiences across the UX and product teams and provide tokens for our developers. Like most design teams, we need to be able to test our work with users. Figma allows for rapid prototyping that we can share with the world to get real-time user feedback through our user testing tool. In addition, we have set up our design system in Figma. It has allowed for easy collaboration and communication with designers across the company and seamless execution for our developers using tokenization.

We use Figma for creating prototypes, enabling real-time collaboration, and coordinating functionalities. It also facilitates presenting designs and conducting review processes. This helps address problems by streamlining the design workflow, improving team collaboration, and ensuring clear communication across remote teams and customers. Another smaller use case is to get ideas via templates and from shared Figma's from other users.
  • Prototyping
  • Templates
  • Real-time Collaboration
  • Useability
  • Knowledge Base
  • In larger files, zooming is sometimes difficult
  • Exports to PDF
Figma excels in scenarios requiring collaborative design, such as creating interactive prototypes and conducting design reviews. It’s perfect for real-time teamwork and aligning functionalities in projects. However, Figma might be less appropriate for scenarios demanding advanced editing or when offline access is needed, as it primarily relies on internet connectivity for its collaborative features.

Figma is a goto tool we use when we start our work everyday. Few years back we used to use different design tools and had to use different software for prototyping and sharing design files which was bit difficult to manage. Now the situation is that every design is created, shared, reviewed and researched are from Figma. It really makes Design and research work easy.
  • Flexibility in design, many plugins as added advantage
  • Ease of Prototyping
  • Seamless collaboration and sharing design files to stakeholders
  • Easy to track on component usage Analytics, I love this feature
  • Adding GenAI to create content based on provided prompt would be game changing
  • Integration with other Collaboration tools like (Miro) could help cater larger audiance
  • May be making prototyping more easy and fun (its much better now compared to other design tools)
Figma is well suited in designing 2d and 3d designs, very smooth to easy to use, could bee used over web or application, has got seamless transition. Prototyping in Figma is next level, I remember we had to struggle a lot to prototype any user journey or product workflow. It has always been the first choice of the designers post launch. One of the best part I like about Figma is the community level engagement, Its deep rooted and helps creating awareness for any new feature and to help if someone has any specific query.

We use Figma not only for prototyping, but also for collaborative discussions on calls, squads planning and retros, presentations and all hands meetings - for example, we have a template for newbies present theirselves in our all hands, and also we use Figjam for icebreakers / playtime every Friday.
  • Prototype animations
  • Version history
  • Multiplayer tool
  • Figma mobile app. It's a mess and doesn't have all the features that I need
  • Search / organization
  • Tabs - they keep coming up and it's a mess. Could be something like Chrome to group my tabs for easy access. (I know that favorites exist, but sometimes I have to hop to a file in a call and it's easier when it's already opened
Figma is suited best for any group of people that need to work on a visual / brainstorm / prototyping area. But it's not ideal if you want to meter something. It's a tool that doesn't scale - it's not like Docs or Sheets, for example.

We are using figma for UX/UI design tasks as well as for creating digital campaign creatives for various digital advertising channels.for UX/UI and product design related projects it is essential for us to use because not only makes it the testing process seamless but it is also a very handy tool to help up cooperate with other teams and this way they can give feedback more easily.
  • intuitive user experience
  • easy cooperation
  • wide range of design possibilities
  • selection within folders for export
  • layer names
  • ai features
Figma is a great tool for designing wireframes and also final pages with ui elements. It is also very good for creating prototypes in order to showcase user flows for user testing or for presentations within the company. In terms of designing creatives it is very easy to use and I like the amount of options it offers, however it lacks built in functions in regards to some picture editing areas. (but this is easy to work around with the help of plugins)

We use Figma for web, apps, prototyping design.
In my role, I use it for Workshop facilitation, internal planning, and collaborative sessions with the team. Also for clients' presentations and social media content desing
  • Intuitive and friendly to use
  • For designers, the learning curve is smooth when coming from traditional software
  • Easy and effective prototype tool to show interactions
  • Great and seamless integration for DEV team
  • Multiple templates and diy options for FigJam boards
  • Easy to share
  • Dealing with heavy vector files
  • same editable properties than Figma for figjam files
  • guest limits with no charge
I've worked in Figma with great success collaborating with small and large groups, within our company, external collaborators, and client-non-designer teams. With a simple onboarding, everybody could interact on a Figjam board or do simple edits in a Figma file.
Though to master design features you'll need training unless you are familiar with design software

My company has a consumer app that allows people to create and trade digital collectible cards.

We have a product development team that evolves the app on an ongoing basis, including a product designer who works almost entirely in Figma to create new assets that we build into the app.

Additionally, Figma's user flows feature is useful when examining particular features such as our onboarding sequence or other multi-step user experiences.

  • High-fidelity design
  • User experience flows
  • Loading speed
  • Ease of onboarding for novice designers

Figma is the premier tool used by product designers. It makes it really easy to share prototypes and assets between designers, product managers, developers, and other stakeholders. It's fairly easy for a new person to learn how to use the platform; in fact, our associate product manager has been able to get to a point where he can create assets that are usable in our mobile app.

We use Figma as our main design and collaboration tool, and it's wonderful. We are a remote organization first, and FigmaJam plays a major role in our daily work, connecting teams asynchronously to collaborate and create our next product evolutions! It would be very difficult to think of iFood without Figma because our entire discovery process is conducted on it. Our product designers are very frequent users of Figma and love it!

Very well suited for startup and tech companies with a product management process well established. Another scenario is in big techs because of its capacity to handle big design systems and integration of everything, including FigmJam, its online collaboration tool. I think, for companies operating in a waterfall way, for example, the value Figma provides could not last in time, as people in those companies are more UI than Product Designers.

Figma is an integral part of our product and feature development process. It has been instrumental in transforming our online experience by empowering our design teams to create prototypes for testing and wireframes for the devs to leverage for deploying the actual react pages. Our figma components are constantly updated and maintained and reduce our development cycles to mere Lu a couple of weeks. Would definitely recommend using figma for product led teams.
  • Realistic wired Prototypes for testing
  • Components for reusing accross wireframes
  • Dev friendly wireframes to reduce sprint cycle duration
  • Figma can have better integrations to publish prototypes
  • Video recording on walkthrough would be a helpful tool
  • Mobile to web wireframes transition could be linked
if you are working on the front end of the website, figma is incredibly helpful. Especially for a revamp or facelift where the entire experience needs to be tested through moderated and unmoderated user testing through tools like maze etc. Where it specifically shines is the speed with which you can do all these things.

I use figma for user experience prototyping and it has been very helpful.
The mail use cases solved by figma are the user journey and how the users will interact with the system.
Various options are prepared in Figma and presented to the users to validate our understanding of the problem and a proposed solution.
  • The options to add layers and clearly depict how the user interactions will appear.
  • Option to switch between design view and review view is great
  • The properties panel clearly display important data about the element being added is a great add on
  • option to export as images is little hit and miss
  • option to zoom in and zoom out can be more user friendly
  • option to have gridlines on top of the design
Anyone looking for a tool to create new prototypes and identifying new user flows will be happy to use figma
Anyone looking for brainstorming and a tool to capture mental model notes
Anyone seeking help in getting UI code to help developers is going to be greatly assisted by figma

We use Fimga right from the ideation stage. That helps in bringing teams to converge much faster from multiple ideas to what really resonates with all stakeholders. The prototyping and ability to mirror screens on devices mean the user interviews are a lot more focussed and users do not have anything left to their imagination. Extremely fine nuances like animations, wait times, and screen transitions help in getting very good feedback from the users.
  • Nuanced design at high speed
  • Screen mirroring on handheld devices for real time feedback
  • Prototyping and animations
  • Search functionality. Once you have 100 screens, it becomes very difficult to search for a particular screen.
  • Ability to make changes in multiple places at once. Often times it is one change in copy, a small change in design and it has to be done in all the screens.
  • Smart Shapes: Ability to create designs from scribbled designs of stylus.
Best Suited for organisations that need to spend significant amounts in the development of Apps and Websites. Even more true for B2C apps and productivity apps. Very helpful in getting a buy-in from stakeholders and users.

Folks have used it for storyboarding and ideation. I think a whiteboard and stylus does a better job in such situations.

I am one of many UX designers, and we use Figma in our organisation as our primary tool for designing all-new products as well as creating new features and improvements to exisiting products. As a team, we love having our core Design System within Figma, which relieves our Visual Designers from redesigning our layouts, and also ensures consistency across our many teams and projects. As a UX designer, I love to use Figma to organise notes, plot out user flows, explore new interactions and throw down quick ideas, building prototypes.
  • Design System makes life so much easier and brings consistancy across multiple designers
  • Auto Layout is amazing and reduces time alignment and spacing
  • I cannot think of any improvements to suggest
I find Figma to be tailored to web and app design, I have used it for both but I currently use it to ideate new products, features and experiences. It's so easy to throw down some ideas, turn it into a working prototype, share the prototypes or designs with colleages, recieve their input through commentings. Even having a spectator mode is well used, when someone is taking the team through their designs for feedback. It's a really solid and well-rounded tool. I have attempted to use Figma as a replacement for Adobe Illustrator, but I have not found an easy way to set the resolution to 300 dpi to adequatly export the images. Figma is not designed for print use, but, I have still found myself desirigin this functionality.

All our product designers use figma. It helps our designers build lo fi, hifis and mockups. Which ultimately goes to our engineers to build the feature/product. They use it for wireframing and coming up with multiple iterations. It also helps senior designers see and review features and collaborate with them to build a crisper iteration.
  • Realtime collaboration on a particular project where people added to it can view and edit hand offs as needed
  • Ability to save reusable components and having a design system with predefined styles and mockups ready to be used anywhere else
  • Ability to integrate into other apps like Slack
  • Better touchpad shortcuts to change between move, edit and comment
  • Instead of undoing changes, figma should have a history option or something like version control to roll back changes to a file
  • improve prototype experience on the figma phone app
If you have a clear sense of what you want to build, figma makes it easy to come up with a wireframe quickly to get you started on the first pass. It is able to so save design systems and color schemes. It can work great both in small and large teams of designer. The new dev mode makes it easier for engineers to use and develop

We use Figma to create high-fidelity mockups of our user interface, create the design system, share handoffs with developers and run prototypes to speed up the development process. Figma is easy to use and the dev mode allows quick inspection of components on the development side. Design is faster and easier with this tool.
  • Design selection
  • Design prototypes
  • Dark mode
  • performance wise, it often happens to slow down with memory problems
  • prototypes are sometimes slow to load
  • in prototypes, the top bar disturbs the prototype interaction
Figma is well suited when it comes to designing functionalities, creating components and reusing them, creating variants and editing the specifications of the component. Now you can also multi-select the same components in different frames. On the other hand, it is less appropriate when it comes to designing user flows, diagrams and other UX activities, but for that, there's FigJam that helps.

Our organization uses Figma for most of the design work. We use Figma for the majority of the design process. This can be from taking notes during discovery all the way to creating prototypes in Figma. Also developers are using Figma in dev mode in order to be able to easily view designs specs.
  • Lo-Fi Wireframing
  • Hi-Fidelity Mock Ups
  • Presentations
  • Note Taking
  • Design to No Code Website would be something that I would like to see done
  • Parent-Child layer organization
  • Image export to web image file
The collaborative feature as well as the incredible user experience has set Figma apart from its other competitors. Working at an agency with multiple design request and the use of various software, Figma has by far been our preferred and recommended software for multiple reasons. It allows for easy file sharing, developers can easily see designs specs in dev mode, and you can collaborate with other designers n real time.

We use Figma to collaborate on creative projects of all kinds. It's an all-in-one platform that lets our broader creative team work together with ease. Plus, Figma's comprehensive suite of design tools reduces the need for multiple software licenses, making it a cost-effective solution for businesses. We love how we can access Figma from any device— a laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc. This helps us get quick reviews in real-time.
  • Cloud-based access means we can use it (and get approvals) quickly, from anywhere.
  • It's real-time collaboration features are pretty much unrivaled.
  • We love being able to make edits in real-time and track changes so even if something is edited accidentally, we can revert back to a certain point in the project and restore it.
  • You can only use Figma when you're connected to the internet, so unfortunately there is no offline editing or access.
  • The version control, while it exists, could definitely be upgraded and more sophisticated.
  • It's not ideally suited for extra large projects like a comprehensive re-brand effort, for example.
Figma’s web-based application is particularly beneficial in a remote work setting. Figma excels in managing design systems and reusable components. Design libraries can be easily shared and updated across projects, ensuring consistency and saving time when working on large-scale applications or websites. While Figma offers basic prototyping capabilities, it falls short when it comes to complex animations and micro-interactions. Our designers have often complained about this limited capability. Unlike some other design tools, Figma's offline capabilities are limited, which can disrupt workflow during periods of connectivity issues.

Developing UI prototypes for testing and usability studies, analysis of varying user workflows, and alignment between different teams/stakeholders regarding the final product design. Primarily used for designing mobile apps and interfaces for health care providers and allows for screens to be shared with regulatory bodies when making changes and providing change rationales.
  • Allows for a UI design source of truth
  • Allows for exporting of actual UI to prototyping tools
  • Allows for fairly easy modelling of user interface workflows
  • Design control is challenging
  • Creating object instances
Figma is great for introducing new stakeholders to the project and all the high level workflows that a user is able to navigate in both a mobile application or desktop website. Brainstorming product changes is also a use case that is frequently seen in the team due to the ability to develop a high fidelity user interface. It has been a challenge pursuing the use of Figma flows as a design controlled version of a user interface.

We use Figma for all UI revamps, as well as FigJam to collaborate on work in our team meetings. The UX and UI team and the Content team work together in Figma on a daily basis. Figma is so easy to use and having visual mockups of content we want to publish makes such a difference, especially when we send it to other stakeholders in the business to review. People like to see the work we are doing in situ before it goes live, and Figma does just that. It allows allows me as a UX Writer to put the copy directly into the design in real time and make sure that the design and content flow seamlessly in each wireframe. I love using Figma to work with designers and couldn't imagine working without it.
  • Collaboration in real time
  • Presenter mode to show content in situ
  • Ability to have global components that update automatically across all screens
  • Sometimes aligning content and editing it (when it's in a purple square) can be tedious
  • Hard to track changes which can make version control difficult
We use Figma for virtually all instances where we want to update content on websites and other digital platforms and MFEs. It is extremely useful for the Design and Content to collaborate on together in real time, and also for other stakeholders in the business like Legal teams who want to see the finished product that they're reviewing.

We started using it for ad graphics design and now we use it for UI and UX design, as well as website and user flow prototypes. We needed a tool that was wasy to access for everyone involved and that was cloud based so it didnt lag.
The support department has started to use it as well for building flow charts because of the ease of use.
  • Prototyping
  • Website design
  • Storing graphics
  • Allowing teammates to work together
  • Downloading animations created
  • Compressing images in figma
  • Pdfs dont show up correctly when opened
Figma is definitely useful when different parties are involved in a single process. It allows teammates to edit and see in real time what others are working on.
It's also very helpful for editing images, and allows you to do almost everything in one place, instead of having to use more than one software for the same purpose.
As it is a cloud software, it doesnt lag or use your devices memory space.
The mobile version although could be better, since currently you can't really edit anything from your phone.

Mainly for creating prototypes for usability testing. Sharing static content with stakeholders is fraught with risks where they misinterpret or assume behaviour. Being able to rapidly create interactive prototypes and share them enables us to have a test platform, a vehicle to get feedback from stakeholders, and a way to communicate intent with developers.
  • Hifi concepts
  • Prototypes
  • Sharing of concepts
  • Version control
  • Export of resources
  • Comment threads
  • Sometimes setting up sharing permissions can be a pain
  • Variable and conditional logic is weird and debugging is a nightmare
  • Vector drawing is a bit quirky
  • Components don’t always behave how you expect
Figma is easy to pick up and get familiar with quickly for designers in any role: UX, UI and Content designers. We can keep our exploration work separate, until we are ready to collaborate and merge ideas. Components are good for maintaining consistency and encourage re-use. Creating realistic prototypes is straightforward for basic cases. Accepting user input in prototypes isn’t possible and this means turning to other tools like Axure.
