Overall Satisfaction with Figma

I use Figma for UX design, which involves several steps:
1. Supporting user interview preparation
2. Ideation for new design concepts
3. Some light prototyping
4. Full-fidelity production design
5. Presentations to project stakeholders
6. Design reviews

Generally speaking, the scope of my use cases ranges from solving new problems with a new product design or addressing issues found in usability testing and supporting the product team to fix them.

Pros

  • It's efficient, very efficient. Many things that take multiple clicks on other platforms can be completed in less than half the clicks, for example.
  • Alignment of objects is fast, accurate and easy as red line guides appear when moving objects around.
  • Autolayout ensures a balanced visual experience and aligns with CSS grid systems.
  • The ability to specify a grid and use it. For example, a 2pt or 4pt or 8pt grid.
  • Components and the ability to create a design system speeds up future work tremendously and creates design and brand consistency.

Cons

  • Prototyping in Figma is pretty much nothing more than a glorified slide show. Sure, variables, etc are available but it takes way to long to set them up and even more time when there are revisions needed.
  • It would be helpful if there were a contextual help system for various functionality. For example, advanced autolayout (like space between) can become very tricky to implement sometimes. I often wish there were an AI assistant to ask for help. I often use ChatGTP to help me through these times.
  • Searching layers needs to be much easier and more intuitive.
  • I would like to be able to make groups like the layers palette in Photoshop. That would help with organization and speed a lot.
  • Much faster than other apps, so mind to market is faster
  • Fully-functional design system ensures consistency in product quality
  • Ability to share Figma workspaces with outside agencies has increased the quality of deliverables
  • Design reviews take less time than if using another app
Figma stands out with its robust collaborative design capabilities, enabling multiple users to work simultaneously, unlike Adobe PhotoShop and Illustrator, which are more suited for individual use. Figma's cloud-based platform facilitates real-time feedback, version control, and seamless sharing of design elements. Its intuitive interface and powerful prototyping tools make it ideal for modern, agile design workflows, enhancing team productivity and efficiency. This makes Figma my preferred choice for UX/UI design projects.

Do you think Figma delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Figma's feature set?

Yes

Did Figma live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Figma go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy Figma again?

Yes

Figma is very well suited for software design. I've used it for several years for all kinds of apps, from small companies to multinational corporations. The infinite whiteboard is fantastic and provides the free workspace I need, just like having a big design studio in real life. The ability to collaborate in real-time with other team members is great and enhances communication tremendously.

Conversely, Figma is not great at doing jobs in print or anything that you would normally do in Photoshop or Illustrator. And that's fine. Those apps are made for a different purpose than Figma.
