As a large e-commerce company, our team of 3 UXRs and other UXDs uses UserTesting daily to run studies on every aspect of users' journeys through our digital products. We evaluate both web and app in mobile and desktop cases. By targeting specific audiences, we can trust that UserTesting can bring the voice of representative users to our design decisions.
  • Large pool of participants.
  • Fast turn-around time from study launch to results.
  • Good quality participants who are used to thinking aloud.
  • Adding clips to highlight reels could be improved.
  • An option to remove filler words from transcript, e.g. um and like.
  • More transparent pricing around studies in terms of credits.
UserTesting is a handy research tool that facilitates a rapid turnaround. The participants are a highlight, with a large pool, good screening options, and good-quality participants accustomed to thinking aloud. Some areas for improvement could be more analysis for tree tests (e.g., directness), more usable highlight reel functionality, and improved transcription to filter out filler words.

Testing the usability of prototypes or new features, assessing the fit of propositions, and assessing the clarity of copy—all these help us ship products that are clear and easy to use. We can make those improvements in designs before we actually build them in code. We mainly focus on the usability side, but it can also be good for assessing the needs of certain customer segments.
  • Unmoderated tests are easy to set up and for users to navigate.
  • It has many features to help analyze a lot of feedback quickly. It highlights themes and sentiments and brings scores together.
  • It's good for finding users to test with quickly and allows you to set particular criteria.
  • It's great for exporting user feedback and highlight reels.
  • Some users that come through do not match the target user profile that I specify.
It's great for usability testing and getting fast feedback on prototypes or live products/websites. It's not as strong for user needs insights, but it can still be useful there.

We mainly use UserTesting for two things: 1. Product discovery (generative research) on customer insights to find pain points and evaluate high-level product/feature ideas or terminology feedback, and 2. Evaluative research, such as doing usability evaluations of clickable prototypes to test for intuitiveness or to get feedback on feature ideas shown through text descriptions and/or mocked-up screenshots.
  • Has a large bank of survey respondents.
  • Has many different test methodology options.
  • Summarizes results automatically.
  • The seat license cost is very high.
  • The in-test UI for testers could be improved.
It's the grand-daddy of user testing tools, especially since it acquired some competitors, so it has lots of functionality and is pretty easy to use. It has a massive bank of test subjects that you can use (at a cost), which means even if you need to screen for specific attributes, you can still find testers and get results very fast (usually a few hours). The main downside to the product is the per-seat license cost, which is the only reason I don't recommend it higher.

UserTesting is used across the user experience team at my company to answer the research questions that we have across our product teams that we support. We use it for a variety of research methods from unmoderated to moderated, generative to evaluative, and more. The problems that the platform helps us solve are the ability to test our assumptions and quickly gain feedback on design concepts that influences the product decisions that our teams makes.
  • Finding niche audiences
  • Ability to collaborate with other UX teammates or product partners
  • Quickly getting insights
  • Expanding their panel of healthcare users and customers
  • Better validation that users are who they say they are
  • More accurate and helpful sentiment analysis on sessions
UserTesting is a great way to quickly gain user or customer feedback in both generative and evaluative research studies. Want to better understand who your users are but don't have time to be on moderated interviews, UserTesting can help. Want to gain early feedback on design concepts, they can help you there too.

We use it to perform unmoderated user testing from time to time and organize individual interviews with customers. UserTesting provide us with access to an open-market customer base outside of our existing customers.
  • Summarising unmoderated user testing.
  • Ease of reviewing individual test clips.
  • Easy to set up unmoderated testing.
  • Avoid professional testers.
  • More natural, candid test participants.
  • Was hard to find the data summarising feature.
It was good but would have been more effective with more natural participants, i.e., first-time test participants and fewer professional testers.

We use it to test our future design and concept. We like to use the preference testing template for this type of need. We also use it to test our current product to see if improvements can be made. UserTesting gives us a chance to validate our assumptions or test new ideas faster than an individual interview or another type of testing. It's a big time saver for us.
  • Good templates for a lot of testing type.
  • Metrics dashboard are well done.
  • The support team is good!
  • How to find panelists - creating a panelist group in an easier way than today.
  • Having a personalized dashboard.
  • More suggestion to improve our questions when we type it - in a live way (AI?).
It's so fast to test a concept with a real user! This is a good and easy way to create a video reel to explain pain points on the interface. We had some issues with the firewall when we used our personal external users (a client based in a government agency) to test. It was harder to set up an environment for them to bypass their own security rules.

I work in UX content design, so I use the platform for A/B, comprehension, and validation testing. It really helps me do what I consider an essential part of my job: getting our content in front of real users before we commit it to the live product. That helps me justify some of the content decisions we make.
  • Ease of use is excellent.
  • The turnaround of testing is very fast.
  • The platform support is exemplary.
  • More content-specific templates please.
  • A dark mode would be great.
  • More comprehensive FAQs.
UserTesting is excellent for solving complex content problems. A lot of work I do is based on compliance messaging, some of which is convoluted and confusing for users. If I can test variants of the content on users to find a way that's both compliant and user friendly then I've done my job well, UserTesting is essential in helping me do that. Regarding less appropriate scenarios, I honestly can't think of anything specific that affects my career. It would not be easy to use for physical product testing, considering the platform is online only.

As a UX Researcher, I employ UserTesting in my daily flow. I launch a number of qualitative studies, and UserTesting has not failed me ONCE in recruiting participants who meet my stringent criteria within tight deadlines. The transcription tool that writes out participants' feedback is also incredibly helpful in my analysis and synthesis process.
  • Recruiting participants based on specific screener criteria QUICKLY
  • Allows me to cancel or replace user sessions EASILY when there are issues with the test plan or participant feedback
  • Simplifies analysis process by transcribing interviews
  • Creates highlight reels
  • Allows you to easily copy and paste standout participant quotes
  • AI feature is not quite helpful -- sentiment analysis is subpar
  • Wish there were more internal tools for data analysis/synthesis like tagging (as Dovetail has)
  • Hoping that the AI summary tool really ups its game soon
Use UserTesting if you need to recruit participants QUICKLY to get fast results. If you're running a particularly stringent project, UserTesting's screener tool isn't the most rigorous as I've had several participants who shouldn't have qualified based on the screener questions pass through and end up as participants in my studies. If strict adherence to participant recruitment guidelines is of top priority, you might want to use a more traditional approach to recruitment.

We've been using UserTesting to close the gaps in our understanding of customer behavior - this has been done through usability tests, card sorting, surveys, preference testing, and gathering insights using some of the UserTesting templates. It's always easy to set up a test, and the participant feedback has been excellent. The ability to summarize with AI and create highlight reels has been helpful in sharing our findings with stakeholders and leadership. This year we are looking to expand the scope of what we use UserTesting for beyond digital products and incorporate user research into more areas of our company, which also allow us to stretch ourselves creatively with how we test. Very exciting stuff and thankful to have a solid foundation with UserTesting's tools.
  • Generates insights based on user feedback
  • Flexible templates
  • Ability to customize audience to zero in on relevant users
  • Would like to ability to generate keyword clouds
  • Highlight reels are time consuming to create
  • AI summaries don't always pull relevant feedback
UserTesting is well suited for testing ideas and validating designs - through preference testing we've been able to determine which designs meet customer needs and can be put through development, without wasting time and resources on designs that will fail. We've also used UserTesting card sorting feature to help refine hierarchy for new pages, allowing us to see exactly what customers prioritize when making decisions.

At our German mobile games company, we use UserTesting extensively to improve the user experience and interface design. This tool allows us to reach specific target audiences, allowing them to offer real-time feedback on our mobile game prototypes via recorded audio and screen activity. Our use case for user testing includes everything from pre-launch idea testing to post-launch game enhancement. We investigate responses to game pitches or early prototypes during the concept phase. We test increasingly polished iterations of the games as production moves forward, concentrating on certain features like character design, stage difficulty, and UI options. We use UserTesting even after the game launches to improve it according to how players engage with various aspects/features of the game—which is frequently surprising.
  • Fast feedback from tester
  • Decent filters to set the audience profile for the tests
  • Mostly testers are great participants with good feedbacks
  • Great customer support
  • Add filters to Contributers Network feature!!!!
  • Add more features for data analysis (e.g. cross data from different participants)
Mainly to test products from industries that are well-established and have a huge use base of users (e.g., beauty, health, bank applications, etc). I would not recommend it for things that are too niche (e.g. French card mobile games) because the tool doesn't have enough filters or screening questions to allow researchers to recruit participants from UserTesting userbase. Probably this is on purpose right?

I am the Lead UX UI Designer on our team, and sit under the CRO team. UserTesting has been invaluable to us, has assisted us through multiple rounds of design iterations on our biggest project to date, Checkout redesign, which has seen a huge uplift and been extremely successful. The tool was used throughout the project to target specific areas of the checkout which would have caused our users issues or confusion and I was able to develop these. I am currently using the tool in the same way to redesign our PDP. It has been used to gain insights into users' experiences of our benchmarked competitors, as well as our current PDP. The tool is used throughout our CRO monthly testing cycle where designs for tests are usertested in short test forms to refine designs. We also use Content Square as a data tool, and are able to gain qualitative insights from UserTesting where we see looping behaviours or rage clicks on the site. We will be progressing to using surveys and interviews as our scope increases, particularly to further understand customer journeys, inspirations, motivations and frustrations.
  • Usable - great dashboards and data metrics
  • Different options for testing to suit your needs - surveys, moderated and unmoderated tests, and interviews
  • Platform keeps you up to date as a partner to any networking events or webinars hosted to learn from other clients and businesses
  • Missing the ability to create folders or tag tests which have been sent out in multiple or successive rounds
  • Word clouds for any verbal responses e.g. describe this page in 3 words
  • More logic to how highlight reels are created, or info pop ups on why they have been created/any interesting segments (this may be more of an AI part to the tool)
UserTesting has been pivotal for understanding the digital experience on our site for users, identifying pain points which can influence Business Cases, Re-designs, Refinements, Trade analysis, and A/B testing programmes within the company. It is suitable for UX teams, CRO teams and may also be helpful for Creative and Marketing teams if feedback on campaigns or content is required. It is particularly useful for iterative design processes, as well as research for design projects. Interviews I imagine would be extremely helpful to truly understand user experiences and pain points. I am hoping our business can move towards utilising this feature. It is, I would say, not appropriate to base all decisions on insights gained from the platform as quantitative data is extremely important, but it can help answer the 'why's' of user interactions, and feedback from UserTesting has always been well-received by management and non-UX experts when I have presented it.

UX team uses UserTesting to conduct research daily, actively involving users in our design process
  • Usability test of prototypes and live products
  • Card sort -tree test for findability assessment
  • Interviews to gain in-depth understanding to the whys
  • The auto-generated HLR from the metrics tab should be editable, it will save research so much time with creating reels.
For UX research, through UserTesting, we are able to gather insights identifying users needs and exceptions of customers and feeding back to the business which has helped with prioritisation and opportunities.

We are using UserTesting at [...] to speed up and scale up our learning capabilities and build the bank the world loves to use.

UserTesting helps us to gather quick feedback on our designs and product direction as well as deep dive into different money and wealth management topics.

It helps us learn as a team and eventualy make better product and design decisions.
  • Quick feedback for evaluative research
  • Collaboration (research as team sport)
  • Large external participant panel
  • Clicks maps
  • Heat maps
  • Quantitative research functionality
If you are a larger company with a bigger research and design team, UserTesting can help to make user research a team sport.

Also, in case you don't have your own participant panel, UserTesting can offer a large participant panel that you can share your study with.

It could be however a more costly solution if you are a smaller company or have a smaller UX team.

UserTesting is helpful for us to get feedback on changes we would like to make in our user interfaces. The participants in studies help us learn which UX/UI is preferred and which UX/UI leads to more efficient and successful task completion. It's a very helpful tool to get rapid feedback. That allows us to iterate and test again, quickly, which is essential for our product teams.
  • Recruit good participants
  • Relatively intuitive screener and protocol creation
  • Easy to download data
  • I often need to spend time "cleaning" the data once I download it. I think the existing formatting could be improved
  • It's difficult to make a video clip
  • It would be great if there was a way to incorporate more advanced survey tools
UserTesting is well suited for business end user and consumer end user research. I've found it less helpful for recruiting some more niche participant groups such as IT administrators.

I often utilize UserTesting's unmoderated sessions to get quick feedback on designs or prototypes. Sometimes I use it for moderated sessions as well.

UserTesting can be a powerful tool to understand how real people experience my organization's software. Here's how I leverage it within my team. I start by defining clear goals for my user testing session. What specific questions do I have about user behaviour? UserTesting offers its participant pool, or I can recruit my testers based on my target audience. Once participants are selected, I'll create a test scenario with tasks for users to complete while interacting with the interface. The beauty of UserTesting is that it facilitates remote, unmoderated sessions. Users complete the tasks on their own while recording their screen and audio. This allows me to observe genuine user reactions and thought processes without influencing their experience. After the test, UserTesting provides recordings of each participant's session. I can watch them individually or share them with my team. As I analyze the recordings, I pay attention to areas where users struggle or hesitate. This can reveal issues with the interface's usability. UserTesting also offers tools to highlight key moments and create clips for easy reference and discussion with my colleagues. By synthesizing the findings from the user testing sessions, I can identify opportunities to improve the user experience. UserTesting empowers my organization to make data-driven decisions based on real user behaviour.
  • unmoderated sessions
  • highlights of the key moments in the recorded session
  • replacing participants in case of unsuccessful session
  • improve the audience so we can target even more specific groups
  • AI powered analysis of the sessions with data put into affinity diagrams
  • verification of the participants, make sure people pot more or less true data about themselves
It's the best for A/B tests or tests where you need a broad audience. If you don't need a real niche audience (that you should recruit then rather yourself), then you can rely on UserTesting. It's good because it's so quick, almost instant, it takes about 10 minutes on average before I can start reviewing and documenting sessions.

Using it mainly for evaluative research for our website and app as well as more generative research via interviews. It helps us with the ease of recruitment to talk to our users, streamlining research operations through screener templates and study templates, and hosting videos or results to easily share with stakeholders.
  • Great customer support should you have a question or issue
  • Easy to recruit and build studies
  • Useful metric features to view ratings, time on tasks, paths, multiple choice prompts, and sentiment analysis
  • Incredibly quick turnaround time on launching studies and getting results back
  • Technical issues periodically
  • Participants in unmoderated studies not being very good user testers (but UT has great functionality built-in to alleviate these situations to replace a tester at no cost or fix the issue)
  • Limited survey functionality and features (ie no rank sorting question)
  • No skip logic or other types of functionality in screener
UserTesting.com is great service for getting quick feedback or something more in-depth. It's well-suited for usability studies and customer interviews, less so for surveys, tree testing or card sorting. Although it has that functionality, it doesn't meet a really delightful experience compared to other tools in that department. Their AI analysis feature is also very handy and works really well.

My team uses UserTesting to conduct moderated and unmoderated usability testing and interviews. The platform solves for not having to manage your own recruitment and incentivization processes. It also helps with the recording and analysis process post-facilitation.
  • Recruitment (broad and vast panel audience)
  • Incentivization
  • Fast-paced and smooth end-to-end delivery
  • Recording
  • Transcription
  • Inviting team members to observe live or asynchronously
  • AI-powered Sentiment Analysis
  • Managing clip snippets
  • Cross-timezone scheduling - On the participant scheduling page, it always defaults to Pacific Time (PT). If participants don't notice this and miss my instructions, they'll go ahead and schedule in PT, even if they're in a different timezone, resulting in having to reschedule their session, which is very cumbersome and time-consuming.
  • Duration of Sessions - You only offer pre-set durations, such as 30 mins and 60 mins, if I recall correctly. Please allow us to select our own durations, such as 45 mins. Also, once the "timer" is up, Zoom just ends the session automatically, which is problematic when often times the sessions go over the allotment, resulting in an abrupt ending.
UserTesting is the best tool I've worked with for facilitating any research projects - ranging from discovery to evaluative research. I appreciate that it offers a variety of methods, beyond just usability testing. It also includes newer features like card sorting and tree testing. By integrating these features, it negates the need to use another tool such as OptimalWorkshop for which your team may not have a license.

We use UserZoom, recently acquired by UserTesting. It's an efficient tool for completing concept tests and usability tests quickly and effectively - completely removes lengthy participant recruitment processes.
  • Usability test participant recruitment
  • Unmoderated usability testing

Best suited for task analysis and traditional usability testing

Less appropriate for discovery research, open-ended research and interviewing (even when opting to do a moderated study, the quality really depends on the panel you are looking for)

Our team has been leveraging usertesting.com for conducting all the unmoderated and moderated research. The tool is pretty intuitive and helps our designer able to conduct the unmoderated tests without any support. The team at usertesting.com has been immensely helpful in working with us in putting together the right set of documentation which standardizes our overall research operations. Their acquisition of UserZoom has also integrated all our userbase into one. I highly recommend usertesting.com to others! UserTesting gives us access to general consumer panels that we otherwise would have no way to communicate with, let alone efficiently recruit for research. UserTesting also allows us to conduct a variety of methods including (but not limited to) moderated interviews, unmoderated usability testing, cart sorts, and more. One of the features we find most beneficial with UserTesting is its out-of-the-box panel filtration and custom screening capabilities, both of which help us recruit the most appropriate research candidates based on learning objectives and timelines.
  • Effective panel recruitment
  • Quick, informative, & friendly customer service
  • Smooth unmoderated usability testing
  • Highlight reel creation
  • Straightforward test creation
  • Card sorting feature
  • Ability to re-launch tests myself that aren't picking up participants as quickly as I'd like
Most appropriate for:

-Unmoderated usability testing
-Quick tests
-Moderated interviews

As a UX Designer, I have completed an internal course that allows me to set up my own tests with the guidance of an assigned UX Researcher. I mainly use UserTesting to test design concepts we are currently ideating on to learn how participants interact with our prototypes. So far I have launched unmoderated card sorts and usability tests and both have helped give me the information I need to either start designing solutions, or go forward with the solution I had already proposed.
  • Ease of use to set up tests
  • Time stamping transcriptions
  • Connecting the correct participants based off screener
  • Updates sent to email once a test is completed
  • The word cloud function isn't very accurate.
  • Personally, I wish participants didn't have to open a Figma prototype link in a separate tab. I wish it could stay in UserTesting so they don't have to hop between tabs.
  • Having certain filters set to default sometimes slip by me. I wish those had no default and were required so I can be sure to not skip over it.
UserTesting is great to help designers get validation on their designs to see if they are initiative or user friendly, however it can also determine if a design needs more work if participants have trouble using/understanding it. At my company, we tend to test after ideation and solutioning to help validate which concept to go forward with, but I am hoping in the future we can start testing early on in the ideation phase to help us get enough supporting evidence to determine whether or not we should explore a design further to create a better case with product and tech folks.

Evaluating new product features with real users: UserTesting helps us gather feedback on new product features before they are released to the general public. We create tests for specific user flows and invite participants to provide feedback on their experience using the feature. This allows us to identify any issues or pain points early on and make necessary adjustments before releasing the feature.
  • easy setup of ux testing
  • recording of videos
  • Testers quality has degraded over time and they could benefit from acquiring more motivated testers
  • Make it easier to distribute mobile app builds
  • Tester sometimes don't answer screener questions truthfully creating unnecessary work for our team
Well-suited scenarios
Basic and quick user testing for general user segments: UserTesting is great for getting quick and basic feedback on general user segments. It is easy to set up and can provide valuable insights into the user experience of a product.Testing specific features or user flows: UserTesting can be effective in evaluating the usability of specific features or user flows. This can help identify any issues or pain points that need to be addressed.

Less appropriate scenarios
Requiring specific user segments: If you require testers from a specific demographic or with certain qualifications, UserTesting may not be the best option. In my experience, relying on UserTesting to recruit specific user segments often resulted in low quality testers and unreliable feedback.In-depth research: UserTesting may not be suitable for conducting in-depth research. If you need more detailed feedback or want to conduct more complex studies, it may be better to use other research methods or tools.
