PRTG real time traffic monitoring

PRTG is an excellent tool for monitoring bandwidth utilization in our organization. It gives us complete real-time data on bandwidth utilization of all our external and internal connections.
  • Bandwidth utilization.
  • Historic data of circuit health.
  • Monitors device health.
Cons
  • Addition of new Sensors to accommodate new networking vendors.
  • Support of Google Maps for geographical mapping.
  • Support of new APIs on the PRTG.
PRTG is well suited for real-time bandwidth utilization. You can also view traffic based on specific segmentation and VLANs. PRTG, however, is less robust when it comes to SNMP monitoring of devices. Device hardware details and monitoring can be improved. It does provide sensors to monitor Virtual machines and their health. It is great if only bandwidth, CPU load, disk space, and memory need to be monitored.

We currently use PRTG Network Monitor to monitor the infrastructure we have at the cross-network level for several projects we manage. Initially, PRTG Network Monitor allowed us to reduce the impact of penalties for delays in restoring services due to non-compliance with SLA. We are currently trying to extend it to use in network monitoring for some specific clients
  • real time monitoring
  • sending alerts via email
  • traffic capture to generate reports both in real time and accumulated
Cons
  • Sending alerts via WhatsApp or through a call
  • incorporation of the database to integrate with power BI
  • create customizable dashboards
It is very useful for monitoring network infrastructure such as Switch, Router, AP, FW, SD-WAN equipment and for the infrastructure part if I consider that monitoring for servers is very basic (CPU, Memory, RAM) which perhaps It can be done with another tool from the same manufacturer or perhaps integrated into the PRTG Network Monitor

Need SNMP monitoring? PRTG Network Monitor has you covered.

We use PRTG Network Monitor to monitor traffic flow on bandwidth, up-time on devices, and custom SNMP sensors. We use it on everything from core level switches down to individual customer connections. Often used in times of troubleshooting to be able to show customers and clients when connections have gone down, how long they have been down, or if there is any active traffic on the connection at the time on inquiry.
  • Real-Time monitoring (30 second averages)
  • Map view (lay out your devices via geo-locations)
  • Historical data on connections / devices
  • Flexibility to add devices that support SNMP output
Cons
  • While detailed, the views of sensors could be a little less clunky
  • Quicker averages (5 seconds or less) for a true 'real-time' view would be ideal
  • A better mobile interface would be good. Often just use the desktop version, even on a mobile device.
We probably use it in less capacity than most people would. For us, we use it mostly to monitor connections and look at historical data. PRTG Network Monitor has a TON of options inside each sensor and at times it can almost be overload when you're trying to tweak the details of each one. If someone is looking for a true 'real-time' monitoring device, just be advised that it functions best on 30 second averages. Can go lower, but we have found 30 to be the ideal spot for the way it performs.

PRTG is used a classroom environment to acclimate students in using the product before they enter the field. Our students are required to take on an internship before graduation and using the products in the classroom transitions them directly to the employer to hit the ground running with industry tools. PRTG is used in a sandbox lab that is running various intrusion testing. The student has no fear of breaking an environment to analyze incidents that can happen in real time. PRTG is also run on the classroom VLAN which also monitors vSphere traffic of over 1000 virtual machines. These machines can be monitored for events and incidents that a demo could rarely perform. The plethora of data interpretation makes the incidents and events a real time situation.
  • Excellent graphs and eye candy.
  • The software can be used on small footprints like devices on the Pine64.
  • There is very little overhead on the product. You install out of the box and do a walk-through configuration.
Cons
  • I would like to see labs done where actual real alarms could be observed.
  • Although they have mapping software for dashboards, it doesn't look as easy as it should.
  • There is a huge learning curve to interpret everything you are seeing.
When you want to do network monitoring quickly PRTG has the way to do it quickly. This would be well suited for a NOC situation where an analyst could focus their time on the product and learn the ins and outs of monitoring.

A solid product that is a good value for the price and works as advertised

We use PRTG for real-time monitoring of all the servers across our various environments. It is, among other tools, a critical part of our infrastructure and alerts us almost instantly when a parameter has exceeded the specified ranges that we have setup. It is a very flexible tool and I have been extremely impressed with it overall.
  • Very easy to setup new sensors (new endpoints to monitor).
  • High level of customization for various features.
  • User-friendly, intuitive web UI.
Cons
  • Documentation could be a little more thorough/easy to understand.
  • Built-in reports could be expanded a little bit more.
  • Does not support SSO or more than one Active Directory sync.
It is an excellent real-time monitoring tool, good for things like device uptime and resource utilization. You can monitor parameters such as ping, CPU and memory usage, available disk space, and also generate reports and graphs based on historic utilization to help plan for future growth. What PRTG is not intended for is use as an Intrusion Prevention System, it will only report to you on what activities that are occurring.
