Monitor your devices with PRTG Network Monitor

PRTG Network Monitor

We use PRTG Network Monitor in our organization since 2021; we started with the free solution with 100 sensors to check with ping our customers connectivity. Now we are certified PRTG partner and we sell our services for many companies for monitoring IT infrastructure (devices as virtual machine, pc, switch, access point, firewall, storage). With alerts and maps, we can easily manage our customers.
  • We can monitor every device on the network
  • With warning and alert notifications we can solve problems
  • With maps you can show the status of your devices; green means everything ok, yellow is a warning and red something not working properly
Cons
  • They should add more specific sensors for each vendor, not only few brand
  • Improve icons for maps and the way to manage them
  • More tutorials and guide for non standard solutions (custom script)
  • More integrations with other solutions
PRTG Network Monitor is very easy to deploy and setup; with autodiscovery and recommended sensors, you can get a lot of informations about your IT infrastructure. You can set warning and error limits for each sensor (for example for free disk space or running process). Then you can setup notification triggers for warnings and alerts so you can receive mail or push notification. You can use it with a browser or desktop app or mobile app.

We use PRTG to monitor many VPN tunnels to our clients' sites from ours and in between client sites themselves. We also use PRTG for disk usage/free space in addition to keys Dell server metrics. Its software and e-mail alerts make sure you KNOW what's going on when it's happening. The customization and ease of use are what sold us on PRTG for our company!
  • Alerting you to changes in statuses
  • Customization and granular tweaking
  • Installation and setup is a breeze
  • Maintaining and growing PRTG is super easy
Cons
  • Sometimes there is A LOT of information to digest
  • Sometimes finding out how to name your alerts/metrics is tough
  • More followup/personal touch from PRTG sales
MSPs can greatly benefit from PRTG. Turning information into action or upsells is crucial to the success of an MSP. A home user or end user group would not have much use for PRTG as it is A) more geared toward professionals who know what they're doing and B) the cost would be tough to justify. PRTG is also well-suited for in-house management and monitoring of small to medium to large businesses wanting to gather their own info or do their own monitoring of equipment and services

PRTG Network Monitor

PRTG is currently monitoring all network devices for our enterprise clients. We have 2 clients being monitored, but have multiple sites with several hundred devices being monitored. We are specifically monitoring from the ISP/MPLS connection, all the way down to the switch and all devices in between.
  • Alerting is pretty accurate. Rarely are we getting a false alert due to ping or packet loss.
  • Real time bandwidth usage monitors are pretty easy to deal with and being able to see back 365 days is nice.
  • Having both a web based UI and fat client is great.
Cons
  • Well the only issue I have had personally is that the fat client tries to load the previous view point you have been looking at after you closed it last, making the application lock up. This could be due to our implementation of it, so I don't really view this as a con.
  • Nothing else to add.
From the way we use it currently, it is just superior to other tools. We are also using Auvik on some of our smaller clients and used PacketTrap previously. Between those previous tools and others that I have had access to, PRTG seems to be very efficient. As I mentioned before, there are no issues with false alerts and the tool is easy to use, so I would recommend it over Auvik or PacketTrap.

We use PRTG Network Monitor to monitor all our network devices, which includes switches, wireless access points, servers, Battery backups, and other critical devices. Using SNMP, we can monitor any important sensors we deemed critical. If any equipment should go offline, our department would get a push notification and email, so we can take a look right away.
  • Setting up the system/server is easy. Web interface is easy to use.
  • Lots of options to monitor specific sensors, rather than the whole device, so you don't get stuff you don't want.
  • Works will all vendors. I am monitoring, servers and devices from Meraki, Cisco, and APC.
Cons
  • The interface isn't fancy. However, they are pushing an updated one, which is better.
  • I would like an easier way to turn off notifications during updates. Right now, I get bombarded with alerts if I do firmware updates.
  • I would like a template set up for a group. If I want to use custom sensors, I need to add this one by one. I would like a way to add a custom sensor, and choose which devices I would like to monitor.
The notification system is extremely important to us. During a major storm over the winter, a majority of our state lost power. Getting alerts on what devices went down and when they came back helps us with our time management. Because of this, I was able to come in after hours and already knew which area of the buildings I needed to go.

This platform only adds value to your department. Right now, I don't know of anything where it's not appropriate.

Certainly! PRTG Network Monitor plays a crucial role in our organization, providing valuable insights into our network infrastructure. By monitoring switches, networking equipment, and servers, it ensures uptime and alerts us to potential issues. With PRTG Network Monitor’s quick setup and network-wide visibility, we can proactively address any anomalies, maintain system health, and optimize performance. We utilize PRTG Network Monitor to keep our department informed by the minute of our network and server infrastructure in the entire organization and the multiple states we operate in.
  • Switch monitoring and finding out if there are communication issues or throughput alerts are reached
  • Big picture view of the whole infrastructure and what is functioning and what is not
  • Uptime tracking is great and lets us know for how long a device is down or overall uptime
Cons
  • GUI is very dated looking and basic
  • Being able to have visibility easily on when someone is looking at a device issue in the org
  • More alert settings for specific situations or providing a pause on certain devices
It is well suited for an environment that deploys networking equipment and is needing monitoring 24/7. It works well to deliver real time data and alerts that are suited for taking action and notifying groups of members.
It is less appropriate for use cases that involve only a few devices that don’t have dedicated teams looking for problems or uptime.
