We use Huawei Ethernet Switches in a large part of our MPLS network. They are very reliable equipment and work very well both as P and PE within our service infrastructure. These switches have very straightforward and intuitive configurations and are easy to adapt to professionals of the most varied technical levels.

High performance, no downsides

Pros

  • There is little to no bandwith loss
  • Power-over-ethernet is a welcome feature
  • VLANs can be configures easily

Cons

  • One of our switches encounted a hardware defect after 6 months of use (but was replaced within warranty)
  • The switches appear to get hotter than what I would expect under normal use

  • One solution means our network managers do not need extensive knowledge and can easily update the network
  • They are cheaper than most alternatives

Huawei Switch, good for standard use and low impact

Pros

  • Good technical support
  • Its configuration is very similar to the Cisco switches

Cons

  • The cost of the hardware is acceptable but the licenses of use are expensive and in the end its price equals or exceeds the switch of other brands.
  • There are functionalities that should be available in the standard version and when they are trying to enable, Huawei support indicates that they have an additional cost which causes inconvenience and difficulties at the time of implementation
  • the performance of the equipment is inferior to those of other brands although it is decent.

Return on Investment

  • For basic and standard functionalities is a viable and relatively cheap option.
  • It is not advisable to use it in high-profile projects, it is preferable to use Cisco switches.
