Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat OpenShift

On-premise and cloud container orchestration environment for diverse compute loads.
As a long term user (>5 years) we have moved our workloads from VMs to the RHOS environments. We use it for everything like versioning, CI/CD systems, testing and production application environments. With class-leading security features it is easy to setup SSO and create environments with quotas.

Pros

  • security administration
  • project quotas
  • node labeling

Cons

  • hardware requirements can be high
  • number of different nodes are sometimes high
  • routers and ingresses are different from plain k8s
  • we can run more than 3 times build pipelines comparing to the VMs
  • save us time deploying from test to production
  • easy to upgrade
Since moving to RHOS we are more conscious about the resources that applications are using as they are finite. We are also more deliberate in security choosing non-root container images as RHOS disallows running containers with root privileges.
Having multiple way to interact with the RHOS we can easily look at the logs via console or use CLI tools.
With proper configuration, containers can use the maximum capacity of the nodes.
It is the best Enterprise ready orchestration solution for us.

Do you think Red Hat OpenShift delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Red Hat OpenShift's feature set?

Yes

Did Red Hat OpenShift live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Red Hat OpenShift go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy Red Hat OpenShift again?

Yes

Recommended for Enterprises looking to modernize their VM-based environments to move into the container world.
RHOS offers several different ways to build images such as build from source. Creating new environments and using one cluster for different purposes can be easy.
RHOS is not best suited for real time applications or when full hardware capabilities are needed.
