Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use three PRTG servers, two with the free edition and the third with a paid edition. We have three different networks, and each of those is covered by one instance of PRTG. PRTG helps us monitor the health of our IT assets and alert us when something is wrong with them.

Pros

Network Monitoring.
Performance Monitoring.
Emergency Alerting.

Cons

Customization (it should be possible to hide some options that we never use).
Wider reach (some sensors cover old versions of particular products, not the latest ones).
Simpler Interface (the interface is too polluted sometimes).

Return on Investment

The less incidents we have, the better for the business.
The faster we act to fix an issue, the less downtime for clients.
The more assets you get covered, the safer your network will be.

Alternatives Considered

We haven't looked for any other tool than PRTG. We've been using it for almost 10 years now, and it has been a good and reliable tool.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you have a small/medium network like us, PRTG would be able to help you monitor your IT assets and get alerts based on pre-determined scenarios. That is what most IT Administrators need to effectively control their infrastructure. I can't speak for large companies because I've never used that with more than 250 sensors.
