Overall Satisfaction with Oracle PeopleSoft HCM

Oracle PeopleSoft HCM is our main HR system. It is used to onboard new hires, as well as providing a feed to many other systems we use on a daily basis. We use Oracle PeopleSoft HCM to provide one location for HR-related business within the organization. This helps us bring down silos that existed before our implementation, integrating the HR system across multiple locations for easy access to all HR data.

Pros

  • On-boarding of new staff
  • Highly customizable
  • Very robust data points when used properly

Cons

  • User Interface, even under Fluid UI is still the same old tired Oracle PeopleSoft HCM
  • In my opinion, costs far too much for most enterprises to implement especially if any customization is needed
  • In my opinion it has gone downhill ever since Oracle acquired PeopleSoft - they have taken on the same mentality as Oracle which unfortunately took the PeopleSoft name down several notches for me personally
  • Has made onboarding new hires easier and decreased some turnover
  • Saves hours by bringing data from multiple systems together
  • In my experience, causes the need for excessive training because of its non-intuitive user interface and long-outdated data entry routines
I wish I could score it higher. In my opinion, the product is very non-intuitive and has remained so for decades. The idea that a cosmetic overlay of new navigation tools would fix this was shortsighted, at best. The system, even with all new updates working, I feel, is still hard to learn and understand. The learning curve makes the implementation very difficult, and new hires have to train incessantly for hours just to understand basic data entry routines and processes within the system. This unfortunately creates extra expenditures from the organization to train everyone appropriately. You need many training consultants to accomplish a good training program - in my opinion, Oracle's out-of-the-box training is simply not easy to understand, and is not appropriate for advanced enterprises who need to heavily customize the product. That said - there are not a whole lot of choices in HCM for large enterprises that offer such a high ability for customization, so Oracle PeopleSoft HCM remains as a top-tier product for many enterprises.

Kronos Workforce Dimensions / UKG Dimensions (discontinued)
Oracle PeopleSoft HCM is great for onboarding new hires. The process, including some newer direct entry features, has been streamlined and made more intuitive. However, there is a steep learning curve for those who are completely unfamiliar with enterprise systems as a whole. In my experience, Oracle PeopleSoft HCM's updates have historically failed to improve the intuitiveness of navigation and features even through a move to a SaaS configuration in the cloud. This makes it hard to train new HR staff because there may be five different ways to accomplish the same thing and none of them are intuitive enough to just "figure out". This has been a bone of contention for me for all Oracle products for my entire 20+ year career, and it has never been fully addressed.

Using Oracle PeopleSoft HCM

3000 - HR teams and access management leads use Oracle PeopleSoft HCM to onboard, manage, and update roles for over 30k employees. This system is an integral part of our process and feeds into our PeopleSoft financial ERP where 12k plus employees manage journals, budgets, assets, and everything else you can think of an organization needs to manage.
200 - We have a staff of 200 IT professionals, of which many are versed in Oracle PeopleSoft HCM and PS Financials.
  • Onboarding new employees
  • Managing benefits
  • Employee self-service for HR-related items
  • Managing employee access to our systems
  • Customizations for employee self-service
  • Integrates well with our other enterprise systems
  • New workflows for Employee Self Service
  • Forms and other interactions
It is most likely we will integrate to a new platform in the next 5 years.

Evaluating Oracle PeopleSoft HCM and Competitors

Yes - Our system was 100% homegrown. We could no longer manage the sheer number of employees and locations within this antiquated system. Oracle PeopleSoft HCM was chosen first for our financial systems and eventually we added HCM to compensate for the inability to integrate our systems fully to the old system. Now, systems flow well.
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Other
Ability to customize was crucial. We had to meet all needs of the business and even though it takes a lot of effort, the product is fully customizable and able to communicate through the various modules seamlessly, once tested and all bugs are ironed out.
No change. We have a good handle on how we evaluate and select solutions for our organization.

Oracle PeopleSoft HCM Implementation

  • Implemented in-house
  • Third-party professional services
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled - Plan, plan, and plan some more. Ask so many questions that your stakeholders begin to think you are crazy. This product has many pitfalls. In fact, all ERP solutions - regardless of their promises - require MASSIVE planning for successful implementation. Don't fall for any third-party who tells you this is something they can do quickly and easily. Use all the tools you have to ensure everyone in your organization is on-board with the design before you begin implementation phases.
  • Mistakes in customized modules
  • Data miscommunication
  • Failed test cases

Oracle PeopleSoft HCM Training

  • Online Training
  • In-Person Training
In my opinion, training in Oracle PeopleSoft HCM is arduous at best. In my experience, there are numerous issues with creating training environments and that makes practice in a sandbox costly. I prefer asynchronous simulated environment training for this reason, but that costs even more due to the development and testing time needed to create that training. eLearning is always there with only the need to keep it up-to-date.
Better suited for the long-term, I think developing an eLearning protocol helped our organization to train users much more efficiently. After an initial training round, the upkeep of instructor-led training is also very costly and difficult. I think eLearning objects from the beginning are better suited for implementation of Oracle PeopleSoft HCM.

Configuring Oracle PeopleSoft HCM

In my experience, it takes a lot of effort and money to configure Oracle PeopleSoft HCM. There is no way around the need for technical experts to help with this. In my opinion, the costs are enormous. Anything you can dream, you can pretty much customize and do - but the capital you'll need to invest is equal to the difficulty of implementing the configuration or customization.
Plan, plan, plan. You need to make sure you know exactly how your system should perform and what it should do before you begin configuration at all. Make sure you invest the time in a proper change management phase with a steering committee and/or advisory board so that you capture the needs of the entire organization before you begin anything.
Yes - we have customized the interface extensively - We have many needs that are not handled out-of-the-box with Oracle PeopleSoft HCM. In my opinion, customizations are absolutely not easy with this product. You'll need extensive resources with the extreme technical knowledge required to create any customization within this and any other Oracle product. The customization requires a lot of coding, and a complete understanding of the backend processes and tables within the product.
Yes - we have added extensive custom code - Same as with the customizations - we need things to operate in a specific way. As with customizing modules, there is really nothing easy about customizing code. You'll need a team to help you determine what will be needed and how they will accomplish it based on the outcome of your design phase.
It cannot be said enough. Prepare yourselves well and you will have a better outcome with any custom configuration of this product. Get the input, vet the input, adjust the input, and make sure it is approved so you have a clear roadmap to follow. You'll need this to determine just who you'll need on your team to make your implementation successful.

Oracle PeopleSoft HCM Support

You may as well plan on having support in-house if you are a large organization. In my opinion, the generic help from Oracle is of little to no value for most organizations. Be prepared to hire people to support you - or, at minimum, hire a team that can actually work with Oracle to support you. You will need experts to help you do this.
ProsCons
None
Slow Resolution
Poor followup
Less knowledgeable
Problems left unsolved
Not kept informed
Escalation required
Difficult to get immediate help
Need to explain problems multiple times
Support doesn't seem to care
Slow Initial Response
No - we have a team in-house that can support us much more quickly and understands our business and its needs.

Using Oracle PeopleSoft HCM

ProsCons
None
Do not like to use
Unnecessarily complex
Difficult to use
Requires technical support
Inconsistent
Slow to learn
Cumbersome
Feel nervous using
Lots to learn
  • Employee self-service
  • Direct-entry hire
  • Administration of roles and security
  • Understanding fields and their meaning
  • Navigating - particularly because there are just too many different ways to perform so many different functions that it's confusing
Yes - Good. Fluid UI has made the mobile experience much better in just about every PeopleSoft product.

Oracle PeopleSoft HCM Reliability

This product can be scaled however you like. There is no limit to what you can accomplish with a large enough budget. This product is always going to require upkeep, maintenance, and updates. Keep this in mind. Your implementation is not a one-and-done - you'll need to constantly and consistently seek ways to improve data flow, solve issues, streamline processes, and add new features.
Typically, our systems are well maintained and do not go down. Once you've gotten to this point, the product is solid. Oracle technical teams are helpful to backend support (IT personnel in our case) and they help in realtime, making it efficient for our technical team to solve issues quickly if they need additional help.
This is highly dependent on the server setup you implement. You need to make sure you've included enough hardware to support your users. Not enough power will quickly rear its ugly head. If you've got the correct setup, the product will operate quickly and provide a good user experience. Oracle is slowed down by certain realtime interfaces to other systems, but this can be addressed by your technical team relatively easily.

Integrating Oracle PeopleSoft HCM

I feel it's an arduous technical task. There is nothing I'd call "easy" to integrate with Oracle products. Very specific technical skillsets are required by your resources to accomplish this. We integrate with numerous systems, and the proper human capital is a must-have. You'll need someone with experience integrating that specific product, or someone with the deep knowledge required to integrate a home-grown system (which will take longer to perfect and require multiple testing cycles).
  • PeopleSoft Financials (easier due to being in the same product family)
  • Cognos (IBM) Reports
  • Data Repository (our own data warehouse)
The design is to have seamless integration with the available data from the integrated systems. This requires a lot of SQL and testing work. No matter what you are integrating there will need to be multiple rounds of testing to determine if the desired outcome is being fulfilled. Once set up, these integrations have seemed to perform admirably.
  • Timekeeping System (UKG)
  • File import/export
  • Single Signon
  • API (e.g. SOAP or REST)
Plan ahead and get opinion on whether the integration is even needed or worth the effort. This is a costly undertaking that could end with the integration not being fully possible. Get the information up front and save time and money. This is the way with any enterprise solution - plan, get input from experts, create and test, implement.

Relationship with Oracle

It's really easy to buy any Oracle product if you've got the enormous amount of money required. The sales team is great - but don't be fooled. In my opinion, it's never as easy as you think to implement this solution for your enterprise. I've seen implementations go for two or more years and then completely fail because questions about functionality were never asked up-front. Don't do that - get the information from people who have been through it before and don't get caught paying for app customizations that you can never use.
In my experience, support is not there for end-users. Tech teams get great support. I know this is by design because enterprises have their own needs for support, but it's hard as a user to not be able to get an answer from the creators of the product itself. If self-service were available to users, I'd give this section a higher rating. That said - a bit of advice - make sure your in-house training and training team is exemplary.

Upgrading Oracle PeopleSoft HCM

Yes - Very smoothly. No impacts. New graphical interface really enhanced our system. This was one of the easiest upgrades I've been through in my 27 years of ERP experience. I'd say Oracle has made strides in this department since acquiring PeopleSoft. I like the way upgrades are being released more than before.
  • Fluid UI Navigation
  • Searchable Menu
  • Navigation Tiles and Groups
  • More UI enhancements to tie in all components
  • Adjustments to tables, fields, and other content to make them more user friendly
