Overall Satisfaction with Final Cut Pro

Final Cut Pro has been a core software for my company for years. For video editing, it can not be beat. The power and features of Final Cut Pro is unapparelled in the market. Even with all of the flexibility, it is easy to use. I use Final Cut Pro for professional video editing for my clients. When they need something special and impactful, they call me to produce it. Often this is when the basic videos available fall short of producing what is needed.

Pros

  • Masking and managing Multiple layers
  • Automated featured: Audio analysis, matching audio clips, more
  • Library and file organization

Cons

  • Ease of setting defaults and grouping commonly used effects.
  • Over 80% of the video work that comes my way is from previous videos and production I have made with Final Cut Pro.
  • Changes and Revisions are a breeze with FCP's file management and processes. This has allowed me to manage adjustments without blowing the estimate, or creating overage charges for my clients.
There is a learning curve if you haven't worked with a layered editor. Creating basic videos with transitions, titles, overlays is simple and you will understand that within an hour of working with FCP.

Getting into the move advanced features (and learning the multitude of shortcuts / keystrokes) will take a like exploration and practice. Fortunately, the FCP help and wide abundance of free tutorial videos makes things pretty straightforward.

The amount of features and functions is massive. You will probably always be learning and exploring.
iMovie is great for rapid editing of videos taken with your iPhone. It is lightweight, fast and simple. However it is extremely limited. You can not layer videos or images. The titles, Transitions and Effects are basic and there are only a few of them.

You really can't compare these two products from Apple. They are for different audiences and needs. Final Cut Pro is for the avid enthusiast or professional. iMovie can only to a fraction of a percent of that FCP does. FCP is 100 times more powerful and is the best option for most professional needs.

If you need to create highly professional video with effects, transitions, masks and overlays, FCP is for you. If you want your videos to stand out from the rest of the noise out there, FCP if for you. Creating full length films or long form communications videos is the sweet spot with FCP. It has all of the power and flexibility you could ever need.

If you are looking for a simple editor to clip videos from your phone, there are better options. Those options will be simple and will also be pretty limited.
