F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) is used to provide scaling for applications by distributing traffic across multiple servers in an environment with 80,000+ applications. Also deployed to multiple datacenters in order to provide disaster recovery / redundancy.
Pros
- Pool member monitoring / health check
- Ease of deployment
- Use of parent profiles for configuration consistency
Cons
- Scalability of platform, specifically management plane
- Resource consumption
- Segmentation of VIPs to prevent impact noisy neighbor vip
- Negative impact in that it makes it very easy for applications to be spun up but cleanup of old/ unused deployments do not happen causing resources to be consumed unnecessarily
- When used in a multiblade viprion guest, issues with backplane and blade replication causing impact
- Ability to deploy multiple instances helped with network segmentation
- F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management, F5 BIG-IP Advanced Firewall Manager (AFM), F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM), F5 BIG-IP DNS and F5 BIG-IP SSL Orchestrator
