Overall Satisfaction with F5 BIG-IP

F5 BIG-IP proxies over 1000 applications for customers across the University. We use Local Traffic Manager to secure, simplify, and standardize web applications for educational technology, business, and our students. We also use Access Policy Manager as our internal VPN product.

Pros

  • Syslog improvements - filter creation
  • A custom bash or tmos command that would show the top 10 largest files in /var/ or /shared/ would be very cool
  • F5 is a highly trusted name in our organization by my colleagues.
  • Delivery and responsiveness to requests make for happy customers.
  • Our goals of making simple and standardized applications allow for fast results.
It's not difficult to understand the parts of application configurations and features. Setting up new virtual servers with multiple profiles, certificates, and nodes is easy for new users through the web interface, which also translates to programability in scripts, DevOps, or other configuration management use-cases. Users from different backgrounds such as networking and infrastructure can use F5 BIG-IP, while users who are familiar with API calls can easily configure objects without needing to understand the platform at all.
As I said previously, the F5 BIG-IP products are far and away the easiest, most robust and powerful application delivery platform I've ever worked on. The user experience was really the most noteworthy difference when using other products. The Kemp Load master platform was mostly unenjoyable. F5 BIG-IP options are endless if you want, but configurations can also be simple. Switching between advanced and basic configurations is another aspect that really stands out in the configuration utility.

I have configured Citrix, Kemp, and A10 load balancers professionally and the ease of use of F5 BIG-IP is far and away the easiest to use and most robust product out there for application delivery. The customization available with profiles and iRules make it a critical part of our data center infrastructure.
