Reliable, Smooth, Quick Backup
Overall Satisfaction with Dropbox
I usually take an entire backup of various devices in the organization (as well as my family). The key challenge for me was to be able to access the assets across devices and at any location, while being able to preview the files across most file formats. Additionally, the other major concern was to save some disk space while being able to retrieve an older file on demand. This was crucial, because being a designer, the free memory on any device is the key to a smoother running of most creative applications like Figma, 3DSMax, Maya, etc.
Pros
- Flawless sync of the entire folder structure
- Preview files across a wide variety of file formats
- Selective Sync of only the relevant folders
- "Online-only" mode to save disk space
- Very reliable data transfers and version controls
Cons
- I like to add emojis to some of the file names (because keyboard allows me to do so), but Dropbox doesn't allow files with certain special characters or emojis. I would love to get this restriction removed.
- I have enabled backups for my devices. Unfortunately, Dropbox doesn't allow me to modify the backup name (it uses the device name for the backup). Being in a multi-device setup, I have a few devices using same names, and it gets crazy to identify the right one.
- I would like to get a feature where device backups are not separated by device. Instead they are incremental file units coming from the same folder from multiple systems to create an exhaustive data repository. E.g. Desktop/ Download folders from multiple devices get synced to a common folder on the cloud, without any limitation to the source device.
- Being a small business, the pricing is a little steep for my organisation, specially when it's not directly reimbursable to my clients. But the confidence of being able to access all my years of work in a few clicks saves me huge amounts of stress and effort. It's true power comes to light when an unfortunate incident causes panic about probable loss of access to valuable data. It is delightful when it gets resolved without breaking a sweat. Hence, I would say that it is eventually worth every penny.
- I am a designer, and I like to create a lot of options for my work. Each of these options is a potential asset which can be potentially monetised directly, or at a future date. Hence, being able to retrieve it at the right time is priceless.
- Dropbox beats Sync in every aspect, apart from pricing. - Google Drive has better search functionality, but otherwise lags behind Dropbox. - Apple iCloud is decent, but works only for Apple devices. Dropbox offers better sync features, controls, speed than all of these. I would appreciate a more efficient search capability in future releases.
