A great software tool
Overall Satisfaction with DraftSight
BCL uses DraftSight for product design, large scale (500m²+) site layouts and assessments in both .dwg and .dxf formats.
Product development is in both 2D and 3D.
It is cost effective and versatile to use without the issues of some 3D work for the more traditional user. I have used both SOLIDWORKS and Inventor and DraftSight offers far more options without needing a bank of computers to process things, just may laptop with a RTX 2070 card.
Pros
- 2D Design
- 3D Design
- Large area 3D assessment
Cons
- Faster rendering
- Better options for custom toolbar control
- Reduced log in, I don't always want to log into 'ContentCentral'
- Without DraftSight basic CAD would cost 3x current ROI
- The package offers everything a business could need for 2D and 3D work
DraftSight offers simple cost-effective options. The ease of use and functionality outweighs all the other products.
It is easy to transfer from the other products as a user, while not offering parametric modelling, it does allow the designer to effectively solve problems that are not always apparent with 3D packages (for example material gathering and thickening).
Give the cost difference, this is and will continue to be an effective package.

DraftSight Feature Ratings
Evaluating DraftSight and Competitors
Yes -
AutoCAD was initially used for business design. The annual costs are excessive for the product, and its use within the business model.
SOLIDWORKS ws trailed for a year. While useful for product development, it was unusable for large scale assessment of 3D environments (highways), and data was not available or overly large data sets were unmanageable, so returned to a solid performer in DraftSight
- Scalability
- Integration with Other Systems
- Ease of Use
Ease of use. I do not have the time or the inclination to wait for 5 minutes while software and models unpack.
I want a quick and clean solution I can work with easily. DraftSight allows for that.
For clients who use AutoDesk products, this isn't an issue as exports are compatible and purchasing and use of land maps etc. functions well for assessment work.
No, whilst so functionality is different from other packages, once you have used the package for a while it is intuitive.
You should also consider a 33% annual investment cost compared to the market leader, so if on a budget but needing an incredibly powerful CAD package, this is the one for your business.
Don't be fooled by the price though, functionality and usability are at the forefront of the product.
Using DraftSight
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
Like to use Relatively simple Easy to use Technical support not required Well integrated Consistent Quick to learn Convenient Feel confident using Familiar | None |
- Getting started, is simple
- Import and export of CAD files is simple, including blocks
- The option for keyboard commands in addition to button activation of functions for an older user makes life simple
- Rendering, can be slow and lots of functionality that I don't use
- Grouped buttons, rather than menu sets can be difficult to fully use initially
- Setting of properties as there are so many options, analysis paralysis can occur at times
- Use of callouts with multiple options that sometimes are not needed
