Overall Satisfaction with Astra DB

We use it as a data lake for some of our products and as a resource for research used by our Data team.

Pros

  • Astra DB helps you to onboard really fast and guides you in your use-cases.

It has an initial learning curve, and it's important to understand the Cassandra architecture and principles if you want to take the best from it. Also the connection could be challenging at the beginning, but it's because of the security standards. Once you add it to your toolbox, you will discover a lot of scenarios where it goes over other storage solutions.
The only area of improvement here is when you use the on-demand service, and you need to increase the amount of writes over a threshold defined by Astra DB, you need to contact support and also will have a defined timeframe for this increased capacity. I understood it was a technical limitation at the time.
Some advantages of Cassandra by itself over the other solutions is being masterless and column oriented. About Astra DB, for us the decision-making factor was having a serverless solution and with the latest Cassandra version and features, additionally it provides a rich set of alternatives to connect from your services.

I recommend Astra DB for any scenario where you need to store immutable data (it can be updated, but it fits better when your data is immutable), also with an access pattern of shard-key + sort-key, and where there's a need to have massive and fast writing speed and high availability. In particular, Astra DB serverless is a great option if you need a full managed solution capable to grow on demand.
