Overall Satisfaction with Astra DB

Astra DB is a database, so it is used to store and handle application data. Astra DB is a SaaS solution for Cassandra, which is highly scalable nonsql database. We were looking for a database which may handle large amount of data and requests, while not needing much of maintenance. Astra DB was our answer.

Pros

  • scalability
  • documentation
  • easy and quick setup

Cons

  • it should be more clearly stated which functionalities Astra/Cassandra is missing and which you may expect from a database (e.g. "or" condition)
  • Support for connection from IntelliJ DB explorer and other DB management tools
  • if Cassandra is right fit for your system it will definetly improve your app performance
  • if it's not you will waste your time and money on implementation and return to relational database after all, make sure nonsql database fits your case
  • SaaS solution decreases the costs, because you don't need anyone maintaining the database
I found Astra really convenient to use, especially in comparison to other Cassandra SaaS solution I was struggling with for some time. The previous one didn't have all the features implemented and was forcing us to make workarounds. While on Astra everything was just working fine and I didn't have any issues with any Cassandra features.
Astra DB is implementation of Cassandra which is one of the most (if not the most) scalable database on the market, making the best out of CAP theory. As a SaaS solution Astra just makes scalability easier to implement and monitor, maintanence is on their side. I think Astra DB is the definition of scalability.
It's really simple Astra DB just have everything implemented and working, while concurrent solutions don't. At least at the moment.

I think it's defenietly the best SaaS solution for Cassandra. I was exploring the market and couldn't find anything better.
The only reason why it's not 10, are bad support for external database management tools and the limitations of Cassandra itself. Other then that everything is on highest level, including customer support.
