Symantec SiteMinder provides a robust solution for authentication and authorization, which has been beneficial for large enterprises and government organizations. With SiteMinder, users have achieved seamless single sign-on and implemented attribute-based access control, ensuring secure access to web resources. SiteMinder's ease of setup and compatibility with most partners during SAML federation setup has been a top benefit for users.

Users have used SiteMinder to optimize app performance, reduce the number of passwords required for different applications, and provide a seamless login experience across multiple domains and federated partners. Moreover, users have realized the benefits of SiteMinder's policy-based authorization that helps control single sign-on and authorization to applications hosted within the organization or business partners in the cloud. Additionally, users have successfully upgraded from SiteMinder R6 to R12, migrated existing Oracle Identity Federation setup to SiteMinder R12 Federation services, and handled access management with the Federation component, both IDP and SP.

Overall, Symantec SiteMinder is an essential tool that ensures secure access to web resources while simplifying the authentication process for users. Its features such as single sign-on, attribute-based access control, policy-based authorization, ease of configuration, and compatibility with most partners make it a reliable solution to meet complex authentication and authorization needs.

Users have provided several recommendations for improving CA Siteminder based on their experiences. Many users recommend using CA Siteminder for companies with complex requirements. This suggests that the platform is reliable and capable of managing authentication and authorization effectively, especially in more challenging environments.

Users suggest considering the cost and time required to enable single sign-on (SSO) for older applications. This indicates that while CA Siteminder offers SSO capabilities, there may be additional considerations when implementing it for legacy systems.

Some users have stated that CA Siteminder is superior to other existing SSO products in the market. This implies that they believe CA Siteminder provides a higher level of functionality, security, or ease of use compared to its competitors.

In addition to these common recommendations, users have also suggested setting up a separate test environment for controlled change management and better documenting the customization of product features and web service authentication. Furthermore, providing demo installers could potentially improve the visibility and understanding of the product for potential users. Overall, users view CA Siteminder as a reliable platform that offers comprehensive identity and access management capabilities.

We use Symantec SiteMinder as our local IDP for other vendors to connect to and establish SSO connections. We do this through creating various entities and federations within the Symantec SiteMinder console. This creates ease of use for customers and flexibility on what our various applications are able to offer. As password security is becoming increasingly tedious we are always looking for ways to securely establish connections through other methods such as Single Sign On
  • Federation Services
  • Detailed logging for troubleshooting
  • Console management is clear and easy to use for less experienced techs
  • Guided tutorials within the console
  • Visual connection testing
  • Support can be difficult to contact
We currently are working to set up Single Sign On and auto provisioning with a new vendor. Symantec SiteMinder visualizes things like SAML responses and assertion attributes within the console extremely clearly. This makes making adjustments on the Vendor's side or even working with Vendor support clear and effective. The only time I would avoid trying use Symantec SiteMinder as a local IDP would be when I am trying to minimize complexity or overhead troubleshooting needs.
  • Extremely flexible/customizable partnership federations
  • Consolidation of SSO settings in one place
  • Requires more knowledge and therefore more time training
6.5
Symantec SiteMinder's usability is high but the barrier to entry can be intimidating for an unfamiliar user. Symantec SiteMinder support can be difficult to get a hold of when needed leading to situations where you're not sure how to proceed. Overall, if you have experience with SSO, federations, SAML, and IDP's, then you will be fine
We use Microsoft Windows Azure AD which can act similarly in comparison to Symantec SiteMinder. While this experience is somewhat narrow, Symantec SiteMinder seems to have more flexability/customization and caters to the crown that prefers to automate and work with linux. I am less familiar with Azure's automated abilities, however, Symantec SiteMinder allows to automate various factors that already line up with our existing Linux environment and setup
