Owler is a valuable tool that provides a range of use cases for its users. Sales and marketing teams rely on Owler to keep tabs on named accounts and industry news, leveraging it as a dynamic RSS feed that requires minimal manual work. This allows them to personalize their outreach and stay informed about changes within the companies they are targeting. Owler also serves as a blueprinting tool in the sales department, gathering information about a company before meetings and providing valuable insight into prospects before initiating conversations.
Additionally, Owler is utilized for due diligence processes in potential investments, addressing the information deficit that can occur when researching small companies. It offers extensive information about a company, including revenue, headcount, competitors, and latest news. This makes it an invaluable resource for gaining insights on competitors and leads, and staying ahead of prospects and competition. However, some users have reported incomplete profiles and inaccurate data for certain companies on Owler, particularly when it comes to determining annual revenue for private companies. Nevertheless, overall, users find Owler to be a useful tool for market research, comparative analysis, prospecting, and monitoring companies that need regular attention.
Valuable Source of Information: Users have found Owler to be a valuable source of information, with several reviewers stating that it provides clear and concise data visualizations. These daily notifications help users stay updated with the latest news and changes happening within companies.
Free Access to Valuable Tools: One of the standout features mentioned by reviewers is that all the benefits offered by Owler are available for free. This makes it a valuable tool without any cost for both small and big companies alike. Users appreciate Owler's commitment to sending only one email per day without overwhelming their inbox. Additionally, they find Owler's simplicity, user-friendliness, and availability of many great features highly commendable.
Limited Social Media Viewing: Some users have expressed the desire for Owler to expand its social media viewing capabilities beyond the current platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn, as they feel that these platforms are not sufficient for their needs.
Lack of Detailed Company Profiles: Several users have mentioned that they would like to see more detailed company profiles on Owler, as they find the current depth of information provided to be insufficient.
Inaccurate or Irrelevant Competitor Suggestions: Users have reported that the competitors suggested by Owler are not always relevant or useful for comparison. This has led some users to question the accuracy and effectiveness of this feature in helping them make informed decisions.
Users of Owler have provided several recommendations for the platform. - Making Custom Lists A Part Of The Plus Plan
Wildly Inaccurate, limited information, overall not worth a dime or 5 minutes of your time
Owler did not address any problems. Upon searching for 10 mid-sized companies that I am already familiar with as a test, all 10 had "incomplete profiles." As well, those with "estimated employee and revenue totals" were wildly inaccurate.
For example, 2 mid-to large companies that I am in touch with with employee counts of 100-250 are left blank in Owler. I am also in talks with a business owner who has 130 employees, but it is listed on Owler as 34 employees.
- Potentially good source of market research for large companies with 1000+ employees.
- Very limited information.
- Inaccurate information, wildly misleading.
- It is not user friendly for searching.
Owler is great for research on small, private companies.
- Owler enables the user to quickly find the data and information that he or she needs.
- I appreciate the customizable dashboard where you can set alerts and track companies you select.
- The latest news regarding the funding rounds of startup companies is especially helpful.
- The top competitors to companies provided by Owler often give me a great point of reference for my competitive analysis.
- Owler often does not provide all of the information I need or am looking for about a company.
- The information on Owler can be inaccurate, almost undoubtedly a result of the user-generated content that is displayed about companies. Owler should have a more rigorous verification process for user submissions.
- The lack of data integrity can cause me to waste unneccessary time attempting to see whether some crucial data points are accurate.
Insights you need
- Alerts users of company changes.
- Sends daily snapshots to your email.
- Auto-syncs with CRM.
- Lots of notifications.
Platform to know more about your market
- Owler is very simple, user-friendly and offers many great features.
- It is completely free which is great.
- The platform gives me a lot of information about our industry trends; about our competitors and partners. It helps to stay updated and always to know the latest news.
- Customized notifications are great, it allows me to spend time reading what I actually need.
- I do not like that Owler asks employees to compare their organization with competitors. I do not think that it gives an objective and accurate rating because if the employee is happy with the company, he/she will just give the highest mark without even paying attention to questions. And otherwise, if the employee is unhappy he/she will just give the lowest mark without paying attention to questions. As a result, the rating is not accurate.
- The customer support is very slow, you can wait forever for their replies.
- I do not like the fact that in order to register and track other companies you need to provide information about your company to allow other companies to track your company. It would be great to have an option to pay a little bit for not providing information about my company.
- Clear and concise data visualizations
- Well organized information about competitors
- Clean look and feel to the site overall
- Easy user experience
- Better competitors for comparison. Often, the competitors were not relevant.
- High Precision News Alerts
- Social Media Viewing (Blogs & Video Uploads) and Filtering
- Funding Data
- Special Alerts for M&A, Executive Changes, and Funding Events
- They should broaden the social media viewing to include Twitter and LinkedIn
- Only offer three event triggers
- Company profiles should be built out with more depth
- Lack of executive data
- Add alerting on a broader set of content categories particularly social media
This is a free service, so it should be compared to free and low cost alerting (e.g. Google Alerts) and PE/VC funding profile (e.g. Crunchbase) services. Owler is well suited for competitive intelligence professionals, named account reps, and marketing professionals tracking company news (web mined company mentions and press releases) and social media (blogs, Video, YouTube). The alerts are high precision and tag for three key events (M&A, Funding, Exec Changes). It is the alerting and social media tools which are the key strength of the service.
The company claims two million profiles, but only has 60,000 with full address information. Content includes competitors, user polls, and funding / M&A data. Owler should be viewed as a free complement to other online company research tools, but it lacks the depth to replace subscription services. Missing content includes long business descriptions; financials and discrete sizing data; family tree linkage, and executive profiles (only the CEO is covered)
While they offer list building functionality, it is quite thin and non-downloadable. As such, I would not recommend Owler for sales and marketing prospecting at this point.
A unique feature is a set of company polls about the direction of the company and CEO performance. Unfortunately, the response rates are often too low to be statistically meaningful.
