Overall Satisfaction with Linode
We use Linode in multiple ways, from specialized development platforms to SSH and VPN hosts to NextCloud servers.
It is very easy to create a new VM with Linode, install a particular Linux Distribution, and then customize the environment to suit the specific needs of that application or developer.
Some of the machines that we have created as development machines have gone on to become test and production machines, or other machines have been created as almost duplicates of those development machines.

- Technical Support
- Ease of creation
- Ease of modification ( settings, etc )
- Easy to allocate IP addresses, both IPv4 and IPv6.
- Some of the documentation requires some hand-holding to get started. It does explain how to do things, but sometimes finding the answer takes work.
- Some of the settings are not obvious, or in locations that are not completely clear without experience.
- Over the years, Linode has enabled us to stop maintaining our own server hardware, and leave that up to them.
- On the other hand, Linode provides a bare machine, and requires us to provide almost all of the systems administration effort.
- DigitalOcean and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)
We have used both DigitalOcean and EC2 in the past, and a client is currently using EC2.
DigitalOcean certainly has some attractive offerings, particularly price-wise, but it did not seem to suit our needs at the time.
EC2 has always seemed too big for our needs, a much larger hammer than we need, although it also has a different focus than Linode and similar companies.

This company first became a customer of Linode approximately 15 years ago, taking advantage of an introductory offer at a Linux conference.
Since then, we have been able to significantly reduce the number and type of machines owned in-house, reselling and recycling the larger, older and more power-hungry machines on-premises.
The number of "machines" provided by Linode both to us and to our clients, has come and gone as needs required, without having to handle any hardware.

Reliability of our infrastructure has always been an issue, and having to deal with local power outages or Internet outages has been a concern.
That concern has been greatly reduced with out use of Linode -- there is no need to worry, because, in our experience, those issues do not arise, or if they do, they are invisible to us.
There are still power and Internet issues for the local developers and users of the Linode services, but they are local issues, not Linode issues.
